Carl's paintings show the interaction of objects aging with those just coming of age. Geometric, man-made structures, static and beautiful, slowly become ordinary. At the same time, the surrounding natural environment just as slowly evolves and begins to flourish.

"Water has always been a fascination with me. Not for its color, as it has no color. Water is transparent. What we see is the combination of varying reflections - of sky, land, and of all other things that reflect into it. The one characteristic water always has is that it moves relentlessly. How to show this is an ongoing challenge. To me, using a seemingly unimportant but static object, on which the viewer focuses, creates an illusion of motion and movement around it."

"To an artist, painting, regardless of medium, is an ever-changing challenge to express what the artist truly SEES, not just looks at."

A progression of the painting "Down River"

Carl: "This initial sketch was made while hanging over the bridge crossing the Manistee River, just outside the town of Mesick, MI. Needless to say, the sketch was made quickly."
